Veskandaran
This giant, imposing city was once a thriving economic hub that went by a name long forgotten. Conquered by the ruthless Valharaan Empire hundreds of years ago, the city changed into a giant coastal fortress, with two layers of walls and mighty towers defending its every corner. The tall, imposing tower that hosts the immortal Elder Council stands in the centre of the great city. The world’s only respite from the Valharaan came when Veskandaran was sacked during the Great Spring Siege, when an alliance of the Forgotten Isles routed their forces. However, their respite was not forever, as the Elder Council returned and re-asserted their authority over the region.
Ovidai
Where Veskandaran is the fortress that trains the Valharaan’s land forces, so Ovidai trains its fleet. Their mighty warships are stationed at Ovidai’s vast network of advanced docks, unrivalled by anywhere in the isles. Anyone seeking to assault the settlement by sea would run a gauntlet of towers and traps that would halt all but the most well-equipped, determined foe.
Miskaya
The trading jewel in the Valharaan crown, this bustling metropolis is the source of the Empire’s commerce and wealth. With liberal tax laws and a high degree of autonomy, this region thrives in trading with all corners of the Forgotten Isles in times of peace.
Ravensport
Ravensport takes its name from one of its original founding families, the Ravens, who founded the sprawling city state long ago. At its peak, it was ruled by a council known as the Inner Circle and received tribute from the other major settlements on the isles. However, following a bloody civil war in which the Ramirez family took power and many of the Inner Circle perished, its fortunes have reversed dramatically. Its former tributes are now independent, and it finds itself impoverished and isolated, its Eastern Quarter haunted by a permanent, eerie fog that extends out to what is now known as the Bay of Sorrows.
Ratha Vastra
A towering settlement that backs onto a hard, granite cliff, there is nowhere better fortified and protected in the whole of the Forgotten Isles than Ratha Vastra. It is home to a hardy race of people who founded the city after the fall of the faraway Sundering Isles. Braving storms and pirates to get there, they are naturally suspicious of outsiders and produce some of the fiercest fighters on the island. Their current leader is Ulvir, who assumed the title of Kalvad, or King in their native tongue. He occupied the throne with his wife, Morag, the Chief Shieldmaiden.
Gava Arianna
Gava Arianna is by far the youngest of the major cities, having only been founded a few generations ago by Arianna. She led a group of slaves to escape from the Valharaan Empire and cross the Straits of Veskandaran. They fled inland to Lake Ara where they built the great city that stands next to the lake to this day. The city was heavily depopulated by a recent war against the Valharaan, where virtually all of the menfolk perished in the war. The city is currently led by Arianna’s great granddaughter, Tianna, and is heavily coveted by the Valharaan Empire due to its history.
Riverwatch
With a history as rich and vast as that of Ravensport to the far west, the fate that befell this great city is made all the sadder for it. Riverwatch enjoyed a long spell of being a supremely wealthy city state, with the finest craftspeople on all the isles congregated into one place. Its leadership was decided by sortition amongst the elite merchant classes, and commerce thrived. However, following the conclusion of the Ravensport civil war, Joseph Ramirez, jealous and fearful of its wealth and power, sacked the city with the aid of a Valharaan army. Now desolate, this city is avoided by locals due to their fear of the ghosts of all those who fell there.
Hightower
In the days when magic ruled the land, Hightower was a pivotal seat of learning for all those who found themselves with a magical gift. Virtually all its inhabitants practised magic, and it was a thriving town because of it. However, following the Great Spring Siege, many of its inhabitants perished and the settlement was depopulated to the point it was abandoned. Nowadays, few are brave enough to enter, and fewer still are heard from again.
